I have a 94 f150 XLT x/cab 4X4 with a 5.0. The truck has 260,000 miles on it. I do not know the milage on the transmission as I wouldn't think that it was original. When I got it the fluid was burnt so I drained the TC and the tranny and changed the filter. It was having occasional issues shifting into OD but worked well otherwise and doesn't seem to slip even towing 4000 lbs. The TC is now throwing a slippage code and the shifting into OD is getting worse. My quandry is do I just change out the TC and see what happens or try to rebuild the E4OD also. Don't want to dump a bunch of unnecessary funds into it although it is a nice Arizona truck. What special tools would I need to rebuild the one I have? What would you do?
Its time for a rebuild. Just a new TC is not going to do it for you. If your level is correct, drain off a quart & replace it with Lucas Trans fix & that may clean up your issues for a while, giving you time to work through your choices.
Google is your friend or use the advance search function at the top. Rebuilding the E4 correctly is not for the faint of heart or the average in mechanical skill. Your going to spend 1-2K$ minimum + a new converter (300-$600) regardless of the quality of the build.
i had a 94 f150 that was slipping i traded it to a guy that put the additive for the limited slip rearends in it and it quit slipping and lasted another two years
^^^i did the same. sold my buddy a ranger that had a bad shift into 2nd he filled it half w the stop slip from lucas and its better. not sure if its good for it but its been fine for the last year/half
Thanks all. I am currently looking for a used transmission also. Found one with a 30 day warranty so I may try it out. I did put in a bottle of TransX but I don't know if that helped or not. The trans doesn't seem to slip but the converter lock up does according to the code that the computer threw.
