No overdrive

I am the proud owner of a 1991 Bronco, 5.8, E40D. Runs, drives shifts great except for overdrive. It doesn't even attempt to shift to overdrive. No slipping, no shifting just stays in 3rd gear. I have run the wiring harness to the trans, all seems fine, the OD switch seems to do what its supposed to do. The linkages from intake to trans seem working and adjusted properly. Whats the next step?

From the 1994 shop manual, the two shift solenoids, Shift Solenoid 1 and Shift Solenoid 2, are both OFF for 4th gear. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears use a combination of on/off for each of them. 4th gear is the only time they are BOTH OFF. So that makes it seem unlikely that any wiring problem from PCM to the two shift solenoids is the problem, since your other 3 gears work OK.

They say troubleshooting starts with checking for Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) codes, then Key ON Engine Running (KOER) codes. And to fix any engine-related codes FIRST, before going after any trans-related codes.

Time for the cheap Actron scanner and learn the joys of reading two or three-digit codes beeped and flashed out.

First let me say thanks Torky2 for the reply. Secondly, You can"t imagine how stupid I feel for not reading the codes first. Since I don't have a code reader I'll use that as my excuse.
Third, I got 9 codes in the KOEO mode. It wouldn't even respond in the KOEO mode. I don't even know where to begin. I just bought this thing CHEEP, so I guess I am finding out why. Following is the list of codes, some I do understand the code but not the meaning.

116
558
621
622
624
626
629
637
654

These were taken manually, no code reader. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah I know, sell it cheep !

Here's my theory... your truck doesn't currently have an E4OD. It probably originally came with one(see trans code on drivers door pillar) but the PO swapped it for a C6 when he couldn't figure out what was wring with the E4OD. What leads me to this conclusion is all those codes, the whole transmission harness would have to be unplugged to get all those.

BINGO..
You are correct Conanski. Just checked the pan shape it is a C-6.
Thanks a million, now if I could just get the hair back I pulled out I'd be good.

that's all it takes, the right questions and the right people to give you what info you need. i tell ya ,you can't go wrong on this site. i've learned the hard way as well, but now i trust no one but the people on this site when i need answers.
good luck with your bronco, hope you don't lose any more hair over it. all u have to remember is, whenever your're in doubt, always turn to these people. no matter the question there's always an answer here. good luck T.C.M.

Well that saves me looking for trans codes!

Just as a double-check, because pan shapes on the internet are probably turned-around every which way - The E4OD has 20 pan bolts, the C6 has 17. The C6 will also have a vacuum modulator with vac hose attached, which is located on the rearward-facing recess, just above the pan. Therefore, there should be a vac hose from manifold vacuum feeding that. Also some sort of kickdown rod or cable to give full-throttle forced downshifts (if the retro was done correctly). On carb engines, the K-D was a rod, which is where all of my C6 experience is, big-block versions behind the early 460's. I have to assume for a truck C6 with fuel injection, a cable was used like with the AOD when behind a F-I engine.

Thanks, you guys are awesome.
It does have 17 bolts and the vacuum mod.
Now that I know it's a C-6, that may explain why my speedo reads about 8 MPH fast any way to correct that ?
I do love this site !!
