E4OD Shifts waaaaaay early

Good morning everyone!

I recently joined this forum because I have a new project: a 1997 F250 Heavy Duty 4x4 that needs some work. Since my google searches almost always bring me here, I decided to stop lurking and start asking directly

Symptoms: When putting the transmission in D, the truck will take off in 1 and very quickly switch to 2, then the converter locks up, then shift to 3, then to OD. When I say very quickly I mean we are all the way through the gears by say 15mph. It will kick out when the engine REALLY starts to lug but once the engine stops lugging it shifts up again. Manual shifting works fine, including the OD button. I have a check engine light that pops up occasionally, but have not been able to find a reader at any of the parts stores that will read it.

Possible causes: I'm thinking it's a transmission input, like the TPS or VSS. Have not ruled out solenoid pack or wiring harness. Could the manual position sensor cause this? The transmission "obeys" when I shift manually.

Hey there, welcome to FTE! Glad you decided to join us... you'll like it here.

This reader will work with your truck's EEC-IV computer...

Amazon.com: INNOVA 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive Amazon.com: INNOVA 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

Or you can pull the codes manually with no reader at all... but you'll have to search on here for how to do that because the site I have a link to is no longer up.

Start with getting the fault codes. Most of the time they'll lead you right to the problem.

These trans are electronically controlled. Like Dixie said, Scan for codes.

You trans thinks the transfer case is in 4x4 low. There is a wire from the transfer case to the PCM that tells the PCM when it is in 4x low. There is a problem with this wire.

Good idea. It won't fix it.

Your '97 won't throw 2 digit codes. Re-run the test.

Listen to Mark. If you didn't happen to notice his signature, he's a former Ford transmission engineer. And don't blindly replace parts either. You need to understand that the computer CANNOT tell you what to replace or even necessarily what failed. It can only tell you what it sees that is "not normal" by way of giving you fault codes. It's up to you to determine WHY a certain condition is present.

Yes. My 94 spit out 3 digit codes.

It's either 3 digit or 2 digit codes never both on the same system, and your '97 will be 3 digit codes.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. We'll CHECK the TPS this weekend. I can't afford to just throw parts at it. As for the t-case, I haven't had a chance to look under the truck (rainy this week) but it is at the top of my list. My Chilton says there's a green wire that runs to the T-case, is that what I'm looking for, Mark?

Rechecked the codes, and the final code is 633, not 63.

633 4x4L (Low) switch closed (operator error)

Check that wire to the transfercase.

Manual transfer case? If so then just pull the wire off the range indicator switch. It's the only wiring that goes to the t-case, you'll see it.

Try the test again or just test from each wire to chassis ground... it should be open and if so then test the switch by shifting to 2H and probing each pin in reference to the transfer case housing. Neither wire should show continuity in 2H.

Either wire shows continuity to ground then you have a short to ground somewhere.

Transfer case switch shows continuity to the transfer case housing then the switch is bad or something broke in your t-case and is causing the switch to be actuated.

With an electric shift t-case I'm not 100% sure but I think that signal comes from the position encoder on the back of the shift motor. You can troubleshoot the same way but I can't tell you which pin is which without a schematic.
