Ok, i have a new tick sound from the drivers side engine. Its not a clack, but it could be, not sure. Im guessing either a tappet or exhaust leak? It is noticeable in park, and really gets going when i accellerate, and drops when i take my foot off the gas.
I have noticed that when i first drive the truck, it over revs a bit and shifts late into 1rst and second, not 3rd. After it drive for 10 minutes or so, it shifts fine.
Im not sure if these are 1 issue, or 2 separate things occuring at the same time.
I have not checked my compression or anything. I read in my Haynes or Chilton that i have hydraulic lifts so i cant merely adjust it.
If i sound clueless, theres a good reason for that, lol.
Thanks again guys, this thing woulda been burning in a ditch somewhere already, if not for all your help.
Unless some head work has been done - studs put in for the rockers - there is no lifter "adjustment" on the 351M/400. They're on a pedestal, and bolt on....and just needed to be torqued to 20-22 foot lbs. That is, presupposing a basic stock cam and 9.500" pushrods checked for preload.
Does that noise sound like a whistling when you get on it? I'll bet it's an exhaust leak. Maybe a chunk of exhaust gasket material flew south.
No whistling when i get on it, But a faster clicking/ticking. When i am idling, i cant hear it much. When i accelerate, it gets loud, then it stops when i take my foot off the gas. I will replace the gaskets this weekend, see what happens
I will replace the exhaust manifold gaskets, hopefully Saturday morning. I have read on here about breaking bolts, ugh, i really dont want all that. And my "new" power steering pump is making a racket still. I am very aware of noises and it is driving me crazy, lol.
Lots of people tell me to buy a newer vehicle if its gonna bother me so bad...
You might try the old water hose method. Get a 3 to 4 foot piece of hose with one end at your ear and the other all around the exhaust manifold and that should pin point exactly where it is. Same thing happened to me recently when I put on new headers. Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker worked great between the headers, gaskets and heads to make a nice seal. Good luck!
Also, the over rev your experiencing is probably the transmission not fully warmed up yet. Mine does that a little too until it hits operating temp.
Changed out both exhaust manifold gasket, booyah! Racket is gone, cept for a little on the passenger side. Appears it was cracked and welded sometime in the past, i will probably switch it out on another weekend.
Found one of the first 1979 trucks in the junkyard that i have ever seen, most are earlier or later. It has a 351 in it, if its stock to the hood tag. The exhaust manifold is accessible and looks the same, can anyone verify? Does a 351 and 400 use the same manifold? I would like to get it at $30, rather than $140 new...thanks
