03 Nav liftgate ajar error HELP!!

Hi Guys and Gals,

got an 03 Nav, and today, I opened the liftgate and then closed it, and now I get liftgate ajar, but it's flush and locked when closed....

so, of course, the real issue is that the truck is leaving all the courtesy lights on, thinking the rear liftgate is still open....

I just disconnected the battery, so it would not drain it all night....

Any ideas? can I bypass it somehow? is it a switch somewhere? a sensor?

Thanks

Spray the latch area down with WD40 and open and close the door a bunch. You have gummed up contacts. No need to disconnect the battery, the lights will time out after 20 minutes or so.

tried that trick just before... opened and closed it like 10 times, still nothing....

ok, I'll see if they go out on their own... don't want to kill the battery...

so, you mean to spray the latch that is at the top center of the door itself... the only place it can lock/unlock...

ironic that it worked when it was 7 degrees here, and now it's 45, and it's failing... go figure...

I'll really go at it tomorrow with more wd... I used the hose - where is the contacts/sensor exactly in there?

I guess this means the alarm is off though, correct?

Thanks

Open and close the rear glass sort of hard but do not slam it so hard it will break anything

Agree with above comments. My 98 was doing was yours is doing now. I darn near had to slam it to the point I was gonna shatter the rear glass! Anywho, I sprayed PB Blaster on my latch assembly and shes as smooth as silk now. I can drop glass from like 2" away from closing and she falls right into place.

interesting - I do have some PB blast... I'll check that out with the glass... yeah, don't want to shatter it though! lol - I bet that's a few pennies, as with everything else on this thing... the cost of ownership!

I'll work both those things today, and see what happens.

Thanks all

I think your problem is the lift gate, not the glass. I think by 03 the glass has it's own message "lift glass ajar".

See if the rear wiper works. If it does it's the hatch latch, if it doesn't it's the glass latch. When the glass is open it locks out the rear wiper from running, for obvious reasons.

Ok, Sprayed them both with wd this am, like, the liftgate was dripping for 3 mins... also sprayed the glass lock, etc..

opened and closed both for about 10 mins, FINALLY JOY!

yes, now that I think about it, the glass hatch has it's own ajar... so must have been the liftgate working now...

2 questions:

1 - how long does that last? and does this mean the sensor/switch is going bad and should be replaced? or leave it?

2) the wiper on the rear glass needs to be adjusted a little bit - how can you remove the arms on the Navigator? on my Explorer, it's a 2 second thing, just pull up on that little tab, and it slides off, and its splined, so you can move it like one notch, and it will now not hit the molding on the windshield, etc...

I can't see where/how to do this for these though... is it via the spring that is holding the arm down? I can't see anyway to get at a lever, etc that would release it from it's hub - It's falling down and rests below the window.

Thanks for all your help guys... hope it lasts a long time now... hate to be afraid to use the rear liftgate...

It doesn't mean the switch is going bad, it just means it was gummed up. As far as how long it'll last, it just depends on where you drive your vehicle (paved roads v.s. dirt roads). I did it in my old 99 expy and it lasted for years until I sold it. If it acts up again, just do the WD40 thing again.
As far as the wiper adjustment I'm not certain about the navigator but on my old expy there was a cover over the end of the wiper arm you could pull off to access the nut that holds the wiper arm on a shaft that was splined. It just pull it off and move it a notch.

I used to have a couple of expy's but have since sold them. I've since gone to owning other Ford vehicles, however, I still like dropping into the expy forum once and awhile to see if I can help out with problems from the experience I gained from owning them. I too am glad you got it fixed, thanks for letting us know.

This site is great, I had the lift-gate ajar error on my 2003 Navigator and followed the spray alot of WD-40 on the lift-gate latch wiped clean which took off a little mild surface rust which was probably blocking the sensor and it is gone instantly. It had been on and off for a few weeks, an occasional slam would get rid of it for a day, but it would return. Many thanks.
