My wife's 99 Expedition has been intermittently having a dead battery. What appears to be happening is the truck "thinks" the driver's door is opened when it is really closed. This causes the dome lights to stay on and drains the battery.
There doesn't appear to be a conventional "push switch" in the door. Has anybody else had this problem, and if so who was it fixed? Thank you.
Very common problem. Do a search will turn up a bunch of threads, but the long and short of it is the switch is integrated in the latch itself and gets gummed up.
A couple blasts of the latch with WD40, a few slams and some more WD40 usually clears it up right away. Might as well do all the latches while your at it.
How old is your battery? I ask only because the battery saver relay is supposed to automatically turn off the lights after 40 minutes. If your battery is being drain within this 40 minute window, then it could be on it's way out. If the lights are staying on longer than 40 minutes, your battery saver relay contacts could be stuck in the closed position.
Thanks guys, I will give the WD-40 a try. The battery probably isn't in the best condition, but I am fairly certain it has enough for starting unless the dome lights stay on. 40 minutes seems like a long time before the battery saver relay activates.
