White smoke
I'd previously posted a thread about white smoke when I first got the truck, but that was when on the gas, with a warm engine. It was the turbo burning oil. got a new turbo.
A couple of months ago, I started noticing white smoke on startup, cold mornings, in the 30s, and only for a second or two.
fast forward a few months, the smoke seems to come out for a bit longer, and it seems that it happens at slightly warmer outside temps, 50-60ish, don't know about warmer, because we haven't had warmer yet.
I haven't noticed any after the engine has been running a while or when I get on the gas.
I did notice the other day that it was coming out for a good while, a few minutes, but it was in the mid 30s at the time.
I have not noticed any loss of coolant/water, I did not see anything suspicious in the last oil change (about 1500 miles ago) and I have not noticed a loss of oil..I think...granted, I may have put a bit too much oil in it last time..first oil change on this truck, may've over done it by about 1/2 quart, I've read that these trucks can take differant amounts truck to truck, with about a 1-1.5 qt variance.
I am mostly worried about having to pull and fix heads and head gaskets. Is there a way that I can check this in my driveway, see if there is something going wrong that I need to be concerned with?
I was on the gas this morning on an on-ramp, and it felt kind of jerky, like it was having power swings, but that could have been the road, or tire-slippage, as it was wet outside at the time too, and I did not think to floor it again today while I was on smooth road...certainly can't for the next couple of days due to freezing temps and ice storms starting tonight.
I will look for the articles detailing checking the FICM, it may be a couple weeks however till I get that accomplished.
As far as the smell, I have a deviated septum..so it is kind of hard for me to smell things, but it does not have an overly strong odor I think, that I should be able to pick up on. Slight diesel smell, as I would expect, but that is it. I've held my hand in the exhaust, and it does not seem to collect any moisture worth noticing.
If it matters, the exhaust is a turbo back 4" pipe with what looks to be a small muffler (but too large to be a cat, unless diesels use 18" long cats that are 6" around). And has one helluva whistling sound at idle..most people comment that it sounds like a jet trying to take off.
