What is the motorcraft option for a shorter version of the FL1A? My 390 is an older car engine where the longer filter butts up against the frame.
Hit the bone yards, I swapped the oil filter housing on my 390 for one that mounts the filter vertical and has a bunch of room now. the car engines had more room than our trucks. Mine came off of a 60's f-250. Bolts right on.
PS. I recall the old part # for the shorter filter in AC was pf-25, it was used on dodges back in the 60-70's same thread just shorter.
There are 2 different filter adapters. The sideways one came on 2wd and a 90 degree came on 4wd's. I think!
My 390 was swapped into a 79 and the 90 degree adapter positioned the filter over the axle and put a dent on the bottom of the filter just riding around the fields.

Just be sure to have a look if you swap adapters.
haven't had a problem with mine yet, I'll have to take a look and see if it could be an issue. I did the swap about 3 years ago. But it has had a pretty easy life since then.

My 4x (1/2 ton) had the sideways one from the factory grinner. Doesn't mean they're all that way. I put the CJ 90 degree on my new motor and have mucho clearance so they may have thrown what they had at each truck.

Hmmm, wonder if the CM being angled had anything to do with it?
Before I put the lift on it I just didn't think there would be enough space to get a filter in sideways.
Oh well, sorry folks. My exclamation point should have been a question mark.

You're actually right.
The regular size filter doesn't fit with the 78-79 steering gear.
Only the short filter.
So you're prolly right.
I keep getting the years mixed up be cause I have 78-79 gear on my 74.
So prolly my mistake in vintage.
