Does anyone know what filters can be used for the spin-on adapters on a 272? I currently have a Pennzoil PZ-1 on it, but can't find any parts stores that carry them.
My 272 inch (car) uses the standard Ford filter - Fram Ph 8a. Truck applications may use a 2 quart spin-on. You should be able to find this on any filter chart. 2 quart are nearly twice as long, but same thread and gasket base.
Stay away from the Fram.
I had one on my 239 a few years ago and after about 300-500 miles my oil pressure had dropped in half. Just thought the engine was getting tired.
Found out from a Y Block forum that others had the same problem.
Went back to Motorcraft and had full pressure again.
right Merc ... ive had several mechanics tell me they wouldnt use a fram for a paper weight! Now i use wix gold in all my cars. Napa carries them here in my area.
Daniel,
I believe that Pennzoil PZ-1 filter is actually made by Fram, so stay away from it. The Motorcraft FL1A is a great dollar value, it's made by Purolator and uses their PURE ONE filter media. The NAPA 1515 is the same filter as the WIX 51515 and either will cost you a little more, locally the NAPA filter is priced cheaper than the WIX. Another thing to be concerned about is the anti-drainback valve, because cold start is when most engine wear occurs. Some engines (not the Y-block, but like the 300) will let you know right away if it has a cheesy anti-drainback valve upon cold start by valvetrain clattering.
Good Luck!
Brett
