CEL and code P0299

I have an 06 that threw the p0299 code. Dealer said it was the turbo. I ended up buying a Powermax since it was $900 cheaper than the Ford reman turbo. They installed the turbo for me. It was great for the 4 trips I drove it. On all 4 trips once it warmed up I made sure to test the turbo very well.

Today I started it and was going to warm it up. I went back in the house and let it run for about 10 minutes. I reved it up just a little and I notice the CEL is back on with the same P0299 code. I clear it and try rev it again no light. Any thoughts? The truck sat for a few days and the temp was about 12 degrees. The truck is stock other than the turbo. I have a 4" turbo back exhaust coming and I want to iron out issues before I put it on. Think throwing the code was just a fluke?

Have a way to see the live date for the ICP sensor and IPR?

A bad ICP sensor can cause a P0299 code.

No. Wouldn't the dealer have checked that?

Also:

Clean out the EBP sensor tubing, clean the sensor
Clean out the MAP sensor hose and "rod out" the manifold nipple.

Tell us what MAP, EBP and BARO are at KOEO

I just have a simple scanner. I don't believe I have a way of getting those.

Pretty hard to troubleshoot the 6.0L without a scan tool. You can try to clean what was suggested and see if the code comes back.

Some recommended (economical) scan tools:

scangaugeII
TorqueAPP for the Android
DashBoss for the IPad, etc

I think I will stop at the dealer tomorrow and ask the mechanic if he checked any of these things. My local dealer is great to work with. Got to love small town dealers. Thanks for the info.

Just to confirm -

You have the DTC, but do not have any real performance issues w/ the truck?

Before the turbo was replaced the boost was all over the place according to the boost gauge. Once the new turbo was in that went away. It is supposed to be really cold the next few days (-25) so I put some of the white bottle Power Service and ran the truck for a while. In MN so I have winter blend but figured to be safe I would add some Power Service. I didn't drive it today because we have blizzard conditions. It ran great earlier this past week. The turbo was replaced at the beginning of the month. I have only put on a few hundred miles since then. There weren't any issues and I pushed it hard a little bit to see if I would still throw a code. I wish I would have driven it today but it was too nasty out. Couldn't see the mailbox 300' away at times.

You might also look for leaks in the charge-air-cooler boots and tubes.

The P0299 can be SO MANY things. Having no real performance issues is a clue though. I suppose it could even be from the aftermarket turbo, but since yours did it BEFORE the powermax, I suspecta leak or a sensor issue to be more likely. The ICP sensor certainly could cause it, but you usually get rough running or surging with that issue.

You can clean out the things suggested pretty easily. The sensors are shown in the "2004 6.0L Coffee Table Book" if you are unsure of their location.

EDIT -

looks like the EBP and MAP sensors are shown in the 2003 Coffee Table Book. Just bear in mind that the EBP location for your truck will be slightly different.

The mechanic did a lot of trouble shooting before deciding it was the turbo. I will ask what he looked at and go from there. I am not much of a mechanic so I was googling the abbreviated terms and found some guides on how to clean the recommend items.
Thanks
Darren

Sorry about the hijack but I was wondering if you could link me to the 2007 coffee table book, it looks like something that I should have bookmarked or saved to my pc, Thanks in advance, Allan

All of them can be found here:

CoffeeTable Books

There isn't a 2006 or 2007 6.0L coffee table book - not enough changes past 2005 to justify them I suppose.

It warmed up today so I took the 06 out for a drive. Had good boost and drove great. No lights or issues.
