Dumb question i know but i cant seem to find what fluid goes in my transfer case. I have a 1991 F-250 with a 7.3L. Its got the E40D tranny, not sure what the transfer case is. I pulled the plug to look at it but its all milky and nasty so i cant really tell. It doesnt smell like gear oil so im assuming it takes tranny fluid? Thanks for the help!
Don't waste your money on Mercon V. Go to Walmart and buy what they call "ATF". In fine print it says for transmissions that use Dexron or Mercon. THAT is what your xfer case and your trans use. Mercon V is for newer Fords, like 2006 and up. Even my 2005 Escape uses regular Mercon.

Yes Mercon will work fine for the t-case, that's what in mine.
As for Mercon V... it was used before 2006. Starting in '98 the 4R70W was filled with Merc V from the factory.
You can normally use MV where straight Merc is spec'd, but not the other way round. BUT... the exception to that is the E4OD/4R100. I understand using MV in these will cause early seal failures.
So straight Mercon it is. I also use it in my steering system (spec is for Type F but it seems to like Mercon better, doesn't whine as much.)

That is exactly what I do. These T/C need to be changed every 20K-30K just like the trans. More often under hard use.
Just to be sure I checked my 2005 Escape owner's manual again and it says to use Mercon. It has a footnote that emphatically states NOT to use Mercon V.
