The NP transfer case in my 80 f-150 takes ATF fluid. I have never owned an automatic trans before and i didnt know there were different "types" of fluids for transmissions. Help me out, what does a transfer case take???
I was going to say something, but maybe I am wrong. Maybe there are automatic t-cases these days. I wouldn't know, All my trucks are manual. I personally have never heard of using ATF fluid in a T-case. I guess i will learn something.

To set things straight. You have to find out what transfer case you have. Since your truck is an 80, I am assuming an NP208. This is a chain driven transfer case and takes ATF fluid like any other chain driven transfer cases I have heard of. The older gear driven cases take gear oil. Like the NP205.
in my truck I have used tranny fluid in the tranny, front differential, and in the transfer case and it is a 74. THe truck has been in the family for years and that is all that has ever been used since it was new. the tranny had 450,000 miles on it until I broke it in half truck pulling. the original owner swapped out the gear lube for atf because it is easier to shift when it is -60 degrees outside during the winter in alaska, where the truck used to be.
A good rule of thumb is if it's an iron case, it takes gear oil, aluminum case, and it takes ATF.
What about the NP203? I have never owned one so really I do not know what it uses. I know its cats iron and is chain driven. I guess if I did have one anyways I would just get rid of it anyways. I am a part time 4WD man myself.
