Transfer case fluid

Hello I was doing some pre winter maint. on my 96F350 w a 7.3 liter diesel and auto trans. this is a 4WD I went to check the transfer case fluid and was suprised to discover that it appears to be Automatic tranny fluid. I have changed the E4OD Transmissions fluid three time in 30,000 miles I have been using mobil one synthetic. My questions are: Does this transfer case use automatic tranny fluid instead of gear lube? The tranny is attatched directly to the transfer case do they "share" the same fluid? If so is it necessary to cahnge the fluid in the transfer case if I am changing the tranny fluid regularly? Thanks for any insight you can give.

Transfer case fluid

No worries mate... The transfer case takes ATF.. I was suprised to find it in my t/c also, & I have a 5 speed.. Thats what the specs call for & your Tranny & t/case are totally separate.. In other words one could be full & the other empty.. Enjoy your rig... Jake

it doesnt matter how much you use 4wd really, because there is always something moving in the t-case because there is an input from the transmission and an out put to the rear wheels that is constantly being used.

it holds less than 4 quarts.

Yeah, change it out whenever you change the trans fluid. It's a completly separate system and the two never mix.

They should never mix. I have seen a few tranny seals that let fluid leak into the transfer case, causing the tranny fluid to get low with no external leaks. A sure way to find out is to remove the transfer case fill plug and have 3-4 quarts of fluid come out.

If three to four quarts come out, you've got bigger troubles, cause somebody SOMEHOW (don't know how) over-filled your transfer case by one to two quarts.

Our Superduty transfer cases hold TWO U.S. quarts.

What I was saying was that the transmission fluid leaked into the transfer case, and that 3-4 quarts came out of the FILL plug. It is rare, but it does happen.

That could happen, I guess.

Kwik, you recently had yours out. What kind of sealing do the trans and t-case have between them?

It appeared to be black RTV. The stuff that I used was white, formulated to reseal engine oil pans on the new 2.0 VW engine. They don't use a gasket, just the sealer. It has the consistancy of RTV on steroids. ZERO leaks.
