I ahve a 1991 F350 diesel with a 5 spd. When I got it, it ground when putting it in reverse and was hard to get it in. I lent it to a "friend" who solve d my sketchy reverse by eliminating it. So, I got a rebuilt and put it in (w new clutch, PP, t-out bearing etc) and with the new tranny, it still is hard to get all the way into reverse. When it seems like it's in, it jumps out when I let up on the clutch even when I keep pressure on the shift lever. It does finally get in and works fine, but I am now wondering if my shift lever is perhaps got a bent or worn finger that is not engaging reverse 100%. I do not want another croaked tranny. Any suggestions?
Are you trying to go directly into reverse, or do you select a forward gear and then go to reverse? I've experienced blocked shifts on quite a few manuals, sometimes I've also had to let the clutch out in neutral and then go for reverse.
Cracked firewall around master cylinder can do that, reverse is not as forgiving as forward gears can be, get a helper to push the clutch down while you watch the mc and see if it moves, if it does then your clutch wont fully disengage and youll have a hard time getting into gear (this usually effects all gears but it could be just starting to break and reverse is telling you theres an issuse) if it is cracked you will need to get the firewall re-enforcement plate.
