Sometimes when I put the truck in reverse it will gring as if I don't even have the clutch pushed in. I can release it and try again and it usually goes in.
I am getting ready to put a new clutch in. Could the bad clutch be the culprit?
The slave is not that old ~3years. I read in the shop manual that the slave should have at least 11mm or more. If less replace. I will check this when she is apart but I was looking for thoughts from you guys.
Hey not sure if this will work on your truck or not but my old 98 Mustang GT used to always grind goin into reverse. Then someone told me before goin into reverse, go into 4th gear then reverse, and to tell you the truth it grinded less times after doin that. Just tyrin to throw an idea out there. BTW they said any foreward gear besides 1st, just 4th was convenient.
Not sure why the 4th to reverse thing helped but a few people told me it slowed something down before goin into reverse.
Not sure, I don't know trannys that good.
unless your slave is leaking down then the problem is that the reverse gear in tranny's are not syncronized. your problem arises when the input shaft is not moving and the internals are. when you try to choose reverse gear you have 1 shaft spinning and the other not. hense the grinding. as epd444 stated all you have to do is stop the gears from spinning before selecting reverse. the easiest way to do it is just choose another gear first while the truck is stationary.
Yep, mine does the same thing if I try to stick it straight into R after idling in N for a while, especially when the trans is cold. Even a partial shift into another gear first to let the synchros do their job works for me.
Yeah it usually does it worse first thing in the morning after I let it warm for a minute. It never really did it that much it is just starting to do it more here lately.
When I did the clutch I drained the fluid. It was very nasty. So was the T-case fluid. I guess the II's and a 5er really do make the tranny work hard.
Anyway once I replaced the clutch and fluid there is absolutely no grinding when going into gear.
I just wanted to update you guys so if anybody has this problem I would recommend to first try to change the fluid in the tranny.
fluid change shouldnt effect reverse though... thats an odd one. and nasty fluid is bearing material or synchronizers....lol.. as long as she is shifting good and quiet, thats all that matters
