What's the difference?

I have 2 -7.3 diesels, listed in my sig. My 01 SRW has got some guts to it, but there is no chip or performance upgrades I'm aware of. It has 100k miles more than my 02 DRW. My 02 runs and works great, but I can tell a serious difference between them, power wise, when I'm plowing. Is it just because it's a DRW? Is there a possibility the PCM was reflashed on my 01 before I got it, and if so, how can I tell? I'd love for my dually to respond the same way, as that's the truck I plow in since my employee doesn't drive stick, especially in the snow. Thanks for reading!

Possible flash by previous owner. Have you physically removed the PCM to see if there might be a generic OTC chip in it? My truck is in the same situation, but in 7 years, I haven't made the time or taken the effort to determine whether it has a chip or is just flashed, but I KNOW it isn't running a stock program.

Jeb-I take it the 01 is an auto?

I have run into the same problem. My dad recently bought an 02 350 auto that seems alot more spunky, and has alot more guts than my 01 250 6-speed.

I know I have a couple issues with my truck, but nothing that should cause the difference I feel between the two trucks. My best guess is the tranny difference, but I have no idea why that would cause such a large difference.

Hopefully I can do some data recording over break on our two trucks, after I do work to mine. Give me an idea as to what makes the difference....

Final drive ratios will be different between the manual and autos. That may be the difference you're feeling.

maadman-
I looked around and found that 6th in the zf6 is 0.72:1 and 4th in the 4r100 is 0.71:1. With both my dads truck and my truck running 3.73's in the rear end, would that make that much of a difference?

You won't be able to tell the difference between 0.71 and 0.72 final drive ratio, they will feel the same.

The difference is Low and 1st gear in the ZF6 is lower then the first gear in the 4R100. The torque multiplication in the 4R100 will overcome that difference but you have to get into the throttle a bit to feel the impact.

My guess is the two vehicles do not weigh the same. The DRW should have 4.10 gears unless you optioned it with 3.73. Every single person I've talked to with the D80 and 3.73 gears was disappointed with the 'get up and go' feel of the truck. I am not sure why but a dually and 3.73 gears just doesn't perform the same as a SRW truck.

I thought autos had 250hp and zf6 was at 275hp

I love both trucks, and they both have different jobs for which they are well suited for. Obviously, my mason dump is a hauler, and I live the manual trans when I'm going up a long hill with a full load. Smokie pulls my 7k landscape trailer, loaded with mowers, and is perfect for it. Snow season is the only time they overlap jobs, and I'm left feeling a little disappointed, but hey, plowing snow with a stick is just no fun. It also likes to get stuck a lot, but mostly cause I have a pita called a Curtis snowplow hanging off the front. That thing gas to weigh 3-400 lbs more than a fisher or western. And I guess that's what got me wondering this in the first place. Smokies throttle response is pretty quick, whereas the mason dump is slow to get moving. So maybe that's my answer. Manual DRW vs Auto SRW. Maybe if I get bored this winter, I'll do a Frankenstein move and switch their engines! then we'll see what the difference is
