I just bought my first 7.3 non turbo truck and I was woundering if it is like a 7.3 turbo engine in the since that the more air you can shove into them the better? I was thinking about putting a AGT performance air filter with built in supercharger blower on my truck, it's just an air filter with a electric fan inside of it to suck more air into the engine. Don't want to buy it if it's not gonna help the engine run better, i'll just keep the stock breather on it.
Any extra air is good air...A intercooled Turbo is the best ...But you can do what ever you want its only money...Start saving money for a turbo kit, keep a eye on CL and Ebay for a used turbo kit or build something if you have time and fab skill's,
I asked a couple people that had put a turbo on this engine and they said that it didn't really make much difference. I figured it would basiclly make it a powerstroke if you added a turbo, but I never drove a 7.3 idi that someone had put a turbo on so I just trusted what they said.
I would skip on the "electric super-charger" idea. I've read that a supercharger requires about 10hp from the engine to compress the air. Electric motors and alternators just arent up to the task of performing that kind of work... Heres a video if you wanna see how disappointing they are.
Adding a turbo does not make an IDI a Powerstroke. The two engines are completely different animals. The last couple of years the of the IDI was factory turbo, it's still an IDI. The IDI is an "in-direct injection" engine, while the Powerstroke is direct injection.
Hypermax makes a turbo kit for the IDI, ATS used to.
Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum!
Depends if you consider 75hp at the wheels a big difference... Id say so, given that they only have about 125whp when NA. A tuned turbo IDI in good health should lay down about 200whp.
