7.3 Turbo options

So Stamped on the side of my 93 turbo is "Garrett A/R 70 m43"

I'm just wanting to know if it would help me any to "upgrade' to a bigger turbo.

I'm not to familiar in larger turbos, Banks sidewinders, etc.

Just wanna know what the options are, If I did buy a larger turbo I'm thinking I'd need to do some mods to the manifold. Am I right?

Any insight on stock or aftermarket turbos would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

P.S. I also don't get any kind of a turbo whistle with this setup ... what would cause that to be lacking?

Are you smoking when you accelerate? If not, get yourself a pyrometer and turn up that fuel!
You won't get the thing spinning unless you're putting fuel in.
Also, any exhaust leaks(pre-turbo) really hurts your turbo's power.

If you have the stock or original with kit, air filter box, that thing kills whistle, pretty sure thats half the point of it.... they definately werent designed to let air in that for sure. The turbo you have is more than capable (in good shape) of cleaning up all the fuel you can throw at it without getting into custom pumps. Also if it is the stock turbo a down pipe is a great investment.

Yea it's the stock turbo. K&N air filter. So what could I do to get whistle?

I don't smoke hardly ever unless I lug it (upshift before its needed) If I stomp on it I might get a whisp of smoke lol.. nothing much.

I have a 3" banks exhuast. Not sure where it begins, I'll check when I get home.

I have a manifold pressure and Pyrometer, I think the pyrometer is off cuz it rarely gets to 600 Deg. Boost gets to a max of about 9.0-9.5

Sound right?

I'm full of questions about these IDI turbo setups so hang with me.

Thanks guys

Any reason why you aren't broadcasting your "mod" solution to the forum?

t4\3-t4 adaptor, and an oil drain spacer, then a small piece of curved tube, you can slap a t70 on that, it wont spool as low, but int he top end it will build nice boost. mine runs like a top now that the turbo is on it

Okay I'll turn up the pump. I'm new to "tightening the wastegate" explain?

Also do you know where I can finds a downpipe for these trucks? It seems they're extinct..

Thanks

I may be mistaken, but if it's a factory turbo 93 model year, it doesn't have a wastegate on the turbo. It may have been changed though or added. My truck is a 94 F350 with a factory turbo. The turbo model is 093. I think that the 93 model trucks used the 088 model turbo that didn't have a wastegate.

All factory turbo trucks use the 093 ATS turbo. Never actually done it, but from what i remember you take the wastgate off, cut some more threads on the rod so you can tighten it down to desired boost. Or simply unhook the WG hose. For the DP have one built, or call banks. They dont list em, but everyone says if you call em they will hook you up.

Wasn't sure about that one Hairy. I adjusted my wastegate in as far as it would go. It helped but it could use more. Need to cut it off, or get it welded. Trying to get a pic on here of my turbo. The connection here at the campground is not so great.

I have been reprimanded for marketing on open forums.. Not sure why but it has happenned.

It does involve a bigger wheel and machining the housing to fit.
Thanks
Russ

KLA, if your wastgate is bottomed out and it isnot black smoking under load then it will need more fuel to increase boost.

hairyboxnoogle, the factory ford wastegate has 2 dimples that lock the sleeve to the threaded shaft and need to be spot drilled to allow it to turn, or it will break the shaft, not always but I have 2 here that were tried and broke.
