Trim polish - stove top cleaner

I have heard of people using glass stove top cleaner to clean and polish trim. Anyone have any experience or thoughts? I know it needs to stay off aluminum and you need to take care with paint, but I have heard others say it is the best clean and shine they have tried.

The stove top cleaner might work but at a much higher cost than a tub of polishing compound.
