Just got done with a total detail of the truck. I did it in my barn, and thought the new chemical guys stuff I was using wasn't leaving residue on the plastic. It won't help in your case, but I use painter's tape to tape off plastic parts before waxing. Doesn't take long to do and it saves a lot of hassle later.
