Hi has anybody tried to clean the trim on there truck and then spray a clearcoat on it to keep it looking good? How did it turn out, ok? Or is there a product that does this better that somebody has on the shelf allready?
Rory:
I have seen this come up several times, and this is a real mixed bag. It becomes difficult to get really impressive results out of some of the trim since it is anodized aluminum, and does not polish. A standard clearcoat tends to peel after a shot period of time, then removal of the rest is difficult and more time consuming than just normal maintenance of the original surface of the trim.
Now, if the original trim could be powdered in a suitable clear, it might last longer, but might still peel under harsh conditions such as wheel well openings, but would last much longer than a conventional spray method.
What trim are you working on? Rubbers and plastics don't really like most paints. A quality agent like mother's preserves applied monthly will do a very good job of keeping it nice. For painted, anodized and bare metals, try a coat of wax. I wax my wheels annually, and the look good as long as I wipe them down when washing the rest of the truck.
Several years ago stripped the anodize of 65 F100 alum. grille then sanded, buffed and finally applied coat of aerosol can of clear. Found tarnished very quickly w/out some type of coating and too labor intensive keeping up with it. If should ever decide to redo intend checking into "clear powder coating".
