Does anyone know of a way to clean the anodized aluminum on these trucks? Such as the side trim with the rubber insert and the lower washboard moulding? The '76 F150 parts truck I have has a nice set but they are cloudy. I tried cleaning this stuff in the past with no luck. Anybody try using a buffer wheel and rouge? Will this desroy it? Any help appreciated.
Back in the the 80's when I was in autobody repair in HS our teacher had us use #00 or #000 steel wool to clean chrome, aluminum trim and even glass (be careful on the glass) it works very well. I still use SOS pads to clean rusty chrome.
First, be sure the trim is clean of any surface grit. Since you've already applied a paste you're probably OK. Remove the vinyl insert to make cleaning easier. Use 600 grit wet paper ( Heavy on the wet!) Keep the paper wet and sand in one direction. Follow it with 800 grit wet, again keep it wet and sand in the same direction. The 800 grit paper will remove the sanding marks from the 600 grit. To finish, use a cotton sewn buffing wheel on your bench grinder with a compound made for aluminum. This will remove the marks left by the 800 grit paper. You could do a third application using 1000 grit, then the compound if you like.
