Engine oil temperature has a HUGE effect on how long the light stays on.
So, if the light stays on for 1-2 secs or 8-10, is it actually functional? Meaning, does it tell us what we "need to know" or is it functioning, as I described, more like a glorified idiot light?
"Does it tell us what we need to know?" As in, is it an indication of whether or not the glow plugs are actually receiving current? Of course not, we already know that. It does, however, give those glow plugs a chance to do something productive (depending on temperature) before the driver turns the lock cylinder to the "start" position.
People have a tendency to turn the key to the "Start" position as soon as the wait to start light goes out. They'll watch that light very intently and the instant that filament begins to dim, the right wrist is turning. If the light only stayed on for a couple of seconds in sub-zero weather, we'd end up with thousands more "My truck won't start" threads than we already do every winter.
