Cold no start

Cold no start
Need some pointers on where to start:
Cold weather hit last night. 18 deg this morning. Cranked the engine but no start. Plugged the engine block heater in and left it, but haven't had a chance to get back to it yet to see if I can crank it up yet.
It would try hard, puff black smoke and then quit. Maybe three or for crank rotations.
In the past I've never had a cold start problem.
