Probably have to change the tail shaft of the 2wd trans, so the xfer case can bolt up to it?

Can I take just the tail housing off or do I have to the C4 apart .

Sorry not my specialty, but I would think just the part that the transfer case bolts to?

I would think that the only difference between a 2wd and 4wd trans is the ability to bolt a transfer case to the back of it.

Meaning the tail shaft housing? Maybe you can get a definite answer from these guys?

This statement from that link leads me to think you have to change the output shaft....

The adapter kit includes an adapter housing, "new C4 output shaft", alignment retainer, snap ring, gaskets, seal, o-ring, vent, fastening hardware and adapter instructions.

I don't know for sure about the C4, but in general I'm pretty sure 2wd to 4wd requires a new tailhousing and a new output shaft. The tail housing goes on and off from the outside, but the output shaft is about the last thing to come out of the case and the first thing back in. So it's probably a complete disassembly/reassembly to swap.

I have no experience with automatics, but I have done Toploaders for Broncos....

Usually with transmissions you will need to change the main shaft from the longer 2wd version to the shorter 4wd version and then you need the connector from said trans to the x-fer case of your choice.

At the end of the day, you will need two parts that are specific to your application. I do know the crossover of these parts, but you need to figure that out when you acquire the new main shaft and intermediate housing....

I don't know if the Top loader will work in a C4 but I did find out that the tail shaft has to come out from the inside so it looks like I am going to be rebuilding it . Thanks for all your help everyone . Rick
