I am about finished with my d44 solid axle swap in into a 2wd what transfercase should i go with. And how will it bolt on this is in an 89 with a five speed.
WEll the beat all transfer is the NP205. YOu can tell a 205 by looking at teh backside where it will have a round plate bolted onto it with 3 bolts. As far as the tranny part im not sure. Um pretty sure though nothin is a direct bolt up.
crazyredneck is on to someting here, he just did not finish. Giving you a hard time crazyredneckanyhow.
If he had finished what I think he was trying to say, he would have said that the output shaft for the transmissionwould have to be changed to accomodate any t-case that you install. You would also need an adapter to bolt the two together.
The solution for guys doing a 2wd to 4wd conversion is to find a "divorced" NP 205 transfer case. Since you have to make up drivelines anyway, you will just have to make up an extra one, but you can use the existing shaft, just cut it down to create the shaft that ties in the trans to the case.
By using a divorced case, you can still use your transmission without modifying it, all you have to do is make a crossmember and linkages and you will be done.
I think that is what crazyredneck would say.
yeah i was thinking about the divorced case. I didnt comment on the tail shaft becasue i wasnt sure about the newer 5 spd trannys. I know the older 4 spds can be changed but wasnt sure about the newer stuff. Didnt want to give out false info. thanks for addin to it though lol
You might want to go junkyard shopping. Look for a 89ish 4x4 with a 5 speed that was flipped or something. That way, you know it was running when it flipped, so everything should be ok, and take the trasmission, adapter, t case, shifter linkage, the crossmember, and even the driveshafts.
The 89s would have a BW1334, which is ok, but I'd rather a NP208 which would come out of a 80-86 or so. This is a pretty good case, has a low range of about 2.8:1, but it is aluminum, and I've seen a few brake.
The best t case you could use would be a NP205, but not exactally sure if it will bolt up(it should, and I know it's been done), nothing a good search couldn't answer.
