302 bellhousings

Hey Guys,
i have a 302 that i had built up nice in another truck. mine is a 390 with t18 warner trans. i need a bellhousing to convert to 302. i see that there is a lot of aftermarket 302 BH's and was curious if anyone has used any that are easy to get online and what ever problems youve found?

thanks

The truck 302 bell housing is typically cast iron where the car bh is aluminum. If I remember correctly...here is a difference in the depth of the bell housings as well.

Be certain the bell housing, block plate and flywheel all match, or there will be starter issues.

Also, the 240"-300" six cylinder engines use the same bell housing to block bolt pattern as a 302.
DO NOT USE a 240-300 flywheel on a 302, even though they physically bolt up, or you will have a serious vibration. The 302's are externally balanced and incorporate weight on the flywheel. The 6 cylinders are internally balanced and have a "neutral" balanced flywheel.

Could you explain a little more? I swapped out a 300 I6 for a 302 with the 28oz flywheel. I used the original 300 bellhousing and have just over 10,000 miles on the 302 and don't think I have ever experienced any vibration. If it matters I left the original NP435 transmission with the married 205 transfer case.

You are using the 28 oz flywheel so you shouldn't have any vibration. If you were to use a neutral balance flywheel then there would be issue. At least that's the way I understand it. What I have always wondered is if the motor is imbalanced how do you know what orientation to bolt the flywheel? Or does it only bolt up one way? Or am I totally wrong on all accounts? lol

I just reread the post and I see it now. You are absolutely correct. For some reason I thought I read that you couldn't use the 300 bellhousing on the 302. Now I see that its the flywheel. My bad

I apologize for the confusion. I could have worded my previous post better.
Just be aware of the depth issues between car and truck bell housings.
Did you get all your questions answered?

Nope, you wrote it right, I just read it wrong. I went from a the original motor to a mustang HO 302, so I used my original bellhousing.

302

I remember my alum bell housing came on a 1981 F150 2 wheel drive,4 speed overdrive,,,,I eventually got rid of the tranny and bolted up a 3 speed with a granny gear to the alum bell housing on the same truck with a 302 motor,,,,,eventually transplanted that same motor and bellhousing in front of the np435 in a highboy, now the motor sits on a stand with a fresh rebuild, eventually landing where ever,,but not in the hb period Also, the 240"-300" six cylinder engines use the same bell housing to block bolt pattern as a 302.
I didnot know that great info
