302 flywheel

I am putting a 302 in my 77F150. It has a 351M now so I will need a new flywheel. E-bay has many 302 flywheels but I dont know which weight I need. They have 28 OZ and 54oz? Is heavier better? I would think heavier would produce more torque once you got it rotating. Thanks,

The 28 and 59 refer to the flywheel's imbalance factor not the weight. If you are using an 81-up 302 you need a 50 oz/in flywheel. Pre 81's use the 28 oz/in. As does your 351M. But your 351M bellhousing won't bolt up to a 302. Whatever bellhousing you choose to use must match the flywheel's diameter or more commonly refered to as the tooth count (for the starter gear) Most 302's use either a 157 or 164 tooth count.

Thanks. I just bought a 76 302. Can I count the teeth on my starter to determine the tooth count I need on the flywheel? Can I use my 351M flywheel? What is imbalance and why is it important? I just found what I think is the correct 302 bell housing so all I'm laking is the flywheel and the engine mounts.

302's and most other Ford V8's (excepting most FE big blocks) are externally balanced. The weight needed to accomplish this is included on the balancer and flywheel. Both have a counterweight included for this. Look at your flywheel, you'll see it. I doubt your 351 wheel will work in a small block bell housing, but you can count the teeth if you want.
