Someone told me a 240 6-cyl flywheel will bolt onto a 302, but that the balancing wheight is different and would need to be rebalanced like the 302. My dad dosn't understand this, he thinks balanced is balanced, and I don't really have a good aurgument against his reasoning. Whats the difference? Why couldn't I just use the 240 flywheel on the 302 if it is already balanced.
The 302 Weight is 28.2 ounces
what would the 240's be?
The 240/300 are neutral balanced, meaning the engine is balanced, the flywheel is balanced and when they bolt together everything is still in balance. This is called internal balancing.
The smallblocks are different. When they designed the block, there was not enough room in the crankcase for a fully internal balanced crank so some of the weight went on the flywheel and some on the balancer. The crank is out of balance, the flywheel is out of balance, the damper is out of balance but when all put together, the whole assy. is in balance. This is called external balance.
28 oz. is the unbalance up to '81, then it went to 50 oz. You need a 302 flywheel.
Originally posted by oldiron Did the same swap to a friends truck. And ran into the same problem with the flywheel. Here's the fix.....Find a good machine shop that you trust that does balance work....The old flywheel needs to be balanced like the new 302 flywheel. Take the machine shop BOTH flywheels and tell them that you need the 6cly. to balance like the v8 piece. What you end up with is the original flywheel, so fit is not a problem on the tranny end, but is balanced for the engine, so there are no vibration issues. If memory serves the cost of the machining was around 45-50 bucks.

Now wait a minute guys can't I just have the 6-cyl's flywheel balanced like a 302's like this previous post sugested?
New flywheels are exspensive, and not many junkyards around here have 302 manual trans trucks for me to get a used flywheel. Most every pre-1981 truck out here has a 400 or 351 modified.
It may cost 40 or 50 bucks to have the flywheel machined...but that in no way is going to cover the price of having a 6 cylinder flywheel balanced to fit a 302. So you know, a 302 is a 302 is a 302. Find a donor motor, Mustang, Crown Vic, Truck, whatever...no reasonable salvage yard will get you for more than 20-25 dollars. Then take it in and have it turned.
