Will a 302 replace a 300-6?

Does anyone know if a 302 will bolt up in place of a 300-6?

Both engines are in 1984 f-150's with standard transmissions. The motor mount issue doesn't bother me, thats easy to overcome.

I wonder if the flywheels will swap and be balanced properly as well.

Thanks for any help.

As far as the connection to the bellhousing goes, yes. It's a direct fit. The flywheel from the 300-six will physically bolt to the 302 but you can't run it that way. The 300-6 is internally balanced and has a zero-balance flywheel but the 302 is externally balanced which means that some of the balance factor is built into the flywheel. In your case it's 50oz. imbalance. If you look at the back of the 302 flywheel you'll see a big wedge cast into the back; that's the imbalance weight:

You need to stay with the flywheel from your '84 302 or use one from a 1982 or newer 302. Prior to '82 the 302 had an imbalance factor of 28oz. so you can't use that flywheel either, along with all 351Ws as they stayed at 28oz. throughout their entire production.

Pay attention to tooth count as well. Trucks commonly used the 164-tooth flywheel but the 157-tooth wasn't unheard of. Count the teeth on your current 302's flywheel and make sure it's the same as the 300-6 or you'll have to swap the bellhousings.

Thanks Tigerdan,

The main problem is that I just swapped a different 302 for the one we are talking about now, That one came from a pickup that had an automatic so I don't have a 302 flywheel for the one I want to put in the 300 hole. That isn't the end of the world, I can buy a new flywheel for $125 or so.

I guess the flywheel holes must be offset in order for the counterweight to be keyed correctly the the crank. The holes appeared to be lined up the same in the one I just did but I do make sure to always put a flywheel back on the same way I took it off so I didn't notice.

I'm a little curious about the flywheel from the automatic. There isn't a weight even close to 50 ounces on it so how was it balanced? I guess I need to look at it closer tomorrow.

Thanks for your help, I think I'll go ahead with the swap process. Gotta get the heads done and reseal the engine first.

Thanks too Hemi Eater,

Luckily there are several in our junk pile so I should be able to get everything mounted correctly.

I recently junked out an 84' 302, automatic. The 302 went in the pickup I took the second 302 from, The second 302 has a good lower end but a bad intake valve on #8 and it belches oil out of nearly every gasket on it, so thats why it needs the heads done and resealed. The one that has the 300-6 now will get the 302 then the 300-6 will go into a homemade generator set. It all just keeps snowballing on me but maybe one of these days everything will be working better than it previously was.
