thanks, Glenn! i'm really curious to see what you get what with all your sound proofing!
between my old truck and new truck, i'd say that my new one is actually quieter (despite 75% more miles on it), but my old one had a few poorly done/oversized holes poked in the firewall for old plow wires and the like, whereas the new one is pretty stock.
as for known issues on this truck, I know that my downpipe is ALL over the RH up-pipe, so i'm sure that's not helping. my shift boot is probably not sealed perfectly (though it is much quieter with it on there than without), and I definitely have a non-ideal, home-made exhaust hanger that is more or less transmitting vibration directly into the frame - and maybe the cab via some heat shielding. eventually i'll attend to those issues and see if the dBs come down at all with that alone...
then when I finally do my paint job, i'll work on sealing doors better and probably sound-proofing a reasonable amount... it'll be nothing like your job, though!
I down loaded that app JP, I'll be playing with it, LOL
I'm really glad I did all that sound proofing, all the noise motivated me. But, if you read it, I have a manifold exhaust leak and a broken bellow in my up pipe. Today I pulled out my DP only to find the source of noise maker #3. Nate asked me this right after I was done with last winters mods and I said that it wasn't rubbing. I'm referring to the DP and this picture shows that it definitely WAS rubbing. Where is my porta power??
Wow!........rubbing bad too wasn't it. That will make a ton of noise. When I put the down pipe in the red/black truck it was touching and it sounded like the whole cab was vibrating.
that is a lot of rubbing! how are you going to fix it. I tried everything I could to separate mine during install. I had plenty of room at the firewall, but its like the turbo flange of mine was just welded on wrong. I may try to 'massage' the flange someday, but other stuff comes first.
when you guys heard the rubbing, though was it more or less constant at all speeds/rpms? I have what sounds like an exhaust noise that happens only ~40-45 mph, no matter the gear. I know that speed-specific (rather than rpm-specific) noises are usually drivetrain related, but this sounds exactly like exhaust drone. i'm thinking it may be caused by an exhaust hanger that is a little too rigid - a piece of strap metal looped down from the frame through an exhaust clamp.
but glenn's image reminded me of my DP rub and i'm wondering if it could be that...
I'm going to get a porta power and start pushing in the firewall. Also, I'll gain some room if I get the new body mounts and maybe shim them. I don't know about the shim with new body mounts yet though. The noise was not constant, I guess it was most noticeable at mid throttle range. When I installed it and complained about noise Nate said that maybe wrapping it with the manifold heat wrap might help. I believe it did and I even got some inbetween the DP and firewall. Things obviously shifted around.
I 'recon that would do it! I have had the DP's move around on me before. As much work as you did on that truck last year, I'm sure there's a possibility that you had it in the clean and then it shifted around after the fact. Hopefully between that and the split up-pipe, you'll have yourself a quiet running truck when this is all said and done. Heck you might have to re-badge that thing as a Lincoln when you're done!
If anyone can use them, I have a brand new set of poly body bushings that I had bought for the old truck before I chickened out and bought a project that was further along. I have thought about seeing if JBG would take them back or not, but if someone can use them that would be even better yet.
That looks to me to be the same kit, but I bought the black ones from JBG.
Yeah they're the same. They just don't list the '97 model year because that year was when it started getting tough to identify the trucks as a series. The '97 F-150 was the new body style, then in '98 there was no F-350 and the only F-250 you could get was the "heavy half" F-150. The 97-98 model years are tough ones for Ford trucks. I happen to believe though that the best PSD powered OBS trucks are all '97's though!
