true - it could be a fun round-robin, though, at a get together. use one phone to check the noise in a bunch of different trucks, then give awards for the quietest and loudest cabs!
I'm pretty sure mine would rank right up top with the loudest ones right now. That's why I'm going to put a muffler and do a little of Glenn's handiwork on mine this winter. I plan to take a before and after sound on mine, if I remember to, inside and out. Probably just in park though, not driving.
Hey - I just found the decibel meter I had previously and installed it again. It has a nice new feature that let's you take a picture with the current decibel reading overlayed. Perfect for shots of the guage cluster while driving ;-)
For others who have an iPhone, if we all download the same app, we could try to compare readings. I bet each phone wouldn't vary more tha 5% one to another.
To get the app just search Decibel in the App Store. It's the one by David Bannach and is free.
Now i'm thinkiin that just might work, at first I thought it couldn't work cause there is just to many different smart phones out there. Most everyone must know somebody with and iphone Your thought of a pic of the instrument cluster is good too cause the speed and rps could be verified.
agreed, but relative readings on the some phone would still be comparable, i'd think. I took some readings on the way into work today and will upload shortly...
and for the record, I do not actually want to have/carry this iphone but was provided it by work and expected to keep it on me at all times (within reason, I suppose). so I might as well get some use out of it, I guess.
ok, here's my readings from the way in (and some reference shots from last night). unfortunately with traffic, I wasn't able to go WOT on the way in - and I don't travel any highways during the commute.
if these pictures show one thing, its that my in-cab noise level at cold idle, vs standing OUTSIDE next to the engine are only 10 dB different, with moderate acceleration in 4th being about 10dB higher still. Glenn, i'm sure your soundproofing will improve on that!
also, I consider my oil heater at home quite loud, but it is apparently significantly quieter than sitting in the cab of my truck at idle. ...interesting.
and I should have taken a reading at the tailpipe at idle as well - i'll have to do that tonight.
Idling immmediately after startup
Moderate Acceleration (not WOT) in 4th gear (ZF5)
Cruisuing in 5th (ZF5)
Standing next to truck at idle
Home oil (diesel :-) ) heater running
TV (at a "reasonable" volume) - Go FLYERS!
(and yes, that is a picture tube television, and yes, the flyers are terrible this year - but I don't care about either, and i'm still going to watch them both for as long as I can!!)
That's great data/pictures! I've got a bunch of soundproofing stuff from my friend that works for the company that supplies BMW/Mercedes. I'm going to have to pull some things apart and start adding some. Even 5 or 10 db improvement is really noticeable it would seem. My cab is so loud no one wants to talk at all... which isn't always that bad!
