oppy, without getting into a treatise on economic theory as it relates to the modern world, I guess my point is that sometimes technology that is still evolving needs to be subsidized along the way (electricity even had its moments). This is particularly true when the immediate need for the benefits of that technology has not yet reached a critical stage. My personal perspective on the real world is that we are headed in that direction with respect to our gross dependence on foreign oil. Maybe not tommorow or maybe not even in my lifetime, but we will surely reach a crisis point if we continue along on the road that we are on. Hence, when (not if) the time comes that we MUST consider alternative fuels as our predominant source of energy, I for one would like to know that we weren't just twiddling our thumbs worrying about snapshot cost/benefit anaylses during the period leading up to the crisis.
I think you're correct about technology sometimes needing a little boost in the posterior in the form of public assistance. I do, however, question whether our dollars are being spent on a viable alternative to the status quo.
There are many, many promising new technologies out there that we could and should be considering. Why does ethanol get such a huge share of the available tax funding? Follow the dollars.
Obviously, you and I have a different take on society's willingness to make changes for the sake of what some view as a bleak future, which is what makes discussions like this interesting. Maybe I'm just more jaded, but I'd bet you an adult beverage or two that there will be no large scale movement away from foreign oil until we as a society have absolutely no other choice, regardless of how much we spend on alternative fuel technologies.
