'96 Straight pipe ?s

Hello all, I have a bone stock 1996 F350 7.3 Powerstroke and I want to straight pipe it. I have already cut the muffler and tailpipe off because eventually i want to spill it out in front of the rear tire. As of right now the exhaust empties out right under the bed. Now I want to cut out the cat. Not needing to go to inspection in this state, I was wondering if anyone here has taken the CAT off and knocked the guts out and put it back on. I have heard of people running a pipe through the box so it looks like the CAT is there. Is running the pipe through the cat necessary for this set up? or could you just stick the box back on and be done once the guts are knocked out (what i plan to do). Also i will need to cut the bolts off, as the are too rusted to turn with a wrench. I plan on cutting them and replacing them with regular hex bolts and nuts. Any ideas on that? Sorry for any stupid questions, I want to straight pipe it and keep it as cheap as possible.

You can just knock the guts out of the converter, and reinstall. I'm running the 97 this way. The exhaust flow won't be quite as smooth as if you installed a piece of pipe in place of the converter. If you can weld, get a short piece of exhaust pipe and weld it to the front pipe of the converter after you cut it from the converter and intall it that way. The 96 crew has this set up on it. The 96 flatbed has a true straight pipe on it, no cat, no muffler, and exiting in the stock location. Other than the sound, I can't tell any difference in the trucks.
On the bolts, regular grade 5 bolts (3 hash marks on the head) will work.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will see if i have any exhaust pipe that will fit in the cat (i doubt i do, unless the tailpipe piece will fit inside and is long enough), if not oh well, no really concerned about that. How hard is it to knock those old bolts out?

Not bad, I used a cut off wheel in a die grinder. Hack saw works too.

If they're that rusted, turning them once with a wrench will probably just break them. Easist way to dispense with rusted fasteners.

Well it's water under the bridge now. As of about a half hour ago it is straight piped. I ended up cutting the bolts off and drilling them out and replacing them with grade 3 bolts. I love the way it sounds now! I can't believe I waited this long
