If we drain and fill, then drain and fill again a couple weeks later, we have replaced about 75% (50%, then 50% of the remaining 50%).
If you don't have a heated flush machine that's all you can do.

Yes, you can get more out that way. It's a good thing to do.
There is no way to get the fluid out of the torque converter.

Why don't you remove the line at the trans and blow all of the fluid out of the line? Why leave what's in the line up to the inline filter?

Yes I understand

Oh Great Idea I didn't think of that
Since you mention this^^ Maybe I could use a Shop Vac to suck fluid from where the Line hooks up at the trans back into where the Thermostat sits in the Pump??
Maybe this will yield another 1/2qt or so of old fluid out with removal of that line you mention
Its getting Better and better as we work threw this!!Thanks for your help
Well I changed my seal, internal filter and external filter on my 04 6.0 this weekend. Boy that external was black and nasty. She took about 8 quarts. I plan on draining in a few weeks and filling again and external filter change. Thanks for the help guys!

Too me you have to balance the amount of work it takes to get that extra 1/2 qt. I don't think the extra labor vrs. the benefit of a 1/2 qt. is worth it. JMHO.

Mine was black as well. Here are the photos from my pan drop about 500 miles after I bought it with 172,500 or so on the odometer. I'm not sure when the last time the Previous Owner changed it. I performed 2 more drain and fills after this pan drop. 24 Quarts total over about 1,000 miles.
I know mechanics who say just leave the transmission alone if it has not be serviced properly. They claim servicing such a transmission will often lead to transmission failure and have seen it happen many times.
I have heard of the same also from other people. Further, I purchased a 2006 F260 5.4 gas engine with automatic transmission with 150,000 miles on it. I took it to have the transmission serviced and these mechanics said to leave it alone; just too risky to mess with.
I did not listen and took it to one of those Quick Lube places with a transmission flush machine and had the transmission system flushed out and fluid changed.
Within a week I started having transmission problems.

Now remember I said I was obsessed
Did you just mean the half qt for that line doing the one line???
Because with very little effort just some air We can get four more quarts of oil out for a grand total of 12 to 13 Court out
Another thought just came to me is what if I blew air into the oil pressure test port that should be after the pump and maybe we wouldn't have to undo that line
Guys, y'all might already know this. There is a mod for our tranny. Like Benny, I'm also obsessed. *evil cackle.
Change the tranny drain pan to the 6.4 pan, change the external filter setup to straight lines, and use the tranny internal filter for the 6.4.
Pretty much it. Lol. We eliminate the external filter setup, get a deeper pan, and the tranny internal filter is now a screen and an actual filter. Dammit.
Who needs hugs? Snuggy will give u some! But only if I'm on top. Have a great day y'all!

It probably failed from something in the shop did or did not do
! sounds like it was on its way out anyway
As far as servicing the transmission right that's just the thing
they say it's supposed to be done with a heated flush machine
Nobody can find one and even if they did find a heated flash machine they wouldn't know how to use it
Many of the quickie lubes also use generic tranny fluids that are detrimental to some trannys. Haven't seen any around here that stock the LV or SP fluid, so what are they using?
I agree just because the trans didn't get serviced at a regular interval Doesn't mean to forget about it and do nothing
That's probably the worst thing you could do
Maybe I'm just not seeing how proper clean fluid and a new filter could damage it even more
Wow... You guys are waaaaaaaay over thinking this.
Some of you guys have taken 10 years just to drive 30,000 miles LOL
Kind of funny when a million dollar excavator when changing the hydraulic and hydrostatic fluid, even if you drain 100 gallons there is still 30 gallons in the system. Does Deere or CAT care? Nope, dump n fill and move on.
