Question Starter Bolts 4.9L

Hey. My bell housing broke on my transmission and as a result of no connections, I only found 1 bolt for my starter. Called Ford and they cant help me. Autozone is so useless for so much any more.

My question is.. Can anybody tell me what size bolts hold the starter on? 3 bolts.. 2 long, 1 short? Sizes?

I can just fit em and guess.. But id like confirmation to know its right. Thank you.

Three bolts? The only Ford three bolt starters (for V8 and inline sixes) I can remember were used on the FE blocks. I can't remember but the Y Blocks may have used three also.

I just had my transmission out to replace a slave cylinder a few months ago, IIRC the two bolts are 5/16-18 by about 1½" long.

How did you break your bellhousing anyway?

What is an FE block? I am pretty sure its a 3 bolt setup, then again Ford is the one that told me that there were 2 long and 1 short, but they could not give me the sizes. Unfortunately I dont have a photographic memory and need to wait until Friday to get to my truck. Ill grab some bolts that size and see if they work though. I could have swore they were 3/8 but now that you said 5/16 I think I did use a 1/2" wrench to take em off...

As for how it broke.. I have no idea. Im thinking it had to have been cracked previously. But the torque of the engine didnt help it any. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...led-my-c6.html

Wow, I have never seen a bellhousing come apart that way.

The FE's were the 360-390-427 etc., There were a plethora of other sizes ranging from I think 332-428. I have read that the FE stood for Ford Edsel, but I am not sure on that.

I would put a considerable amount of money (up to a whole nickel) on your starter having two bolts that hold it to the bellhousing. I am just not that sure of the length. I would buy a couple of each length from 1¼" to 2" to be sure I didn't have to go back to the hardware store, the bolts will be less than the gas for a second trip.

I don't know about the 300 six, but all of my V8s (302, 351 and 460) have used two 3/8-16x1.25 bolts (although 3/8-16x1.5 seems to me to work a little better). The starter bolts on my 460 had 1/2" heads (typically 1/2" heads are on 5/16-18 bolts) but they were 3/8-16. I replaced them with hardware store 3/8-16 with conventional 9/16" heads with no problems.

The 300 I6 uses the same bellhousing as the 302/351 engines. The starters are the same for the engines too(auto to auto and manual to manual tranys).

I'm using a 302 starter on my 300 I6 right now. And they are two bolt mounting.

Got it together. All done. Truck is running. Gotta get used to a transmission without a shift kit.. Have soft smooth shifts now. Not hard solid shifts. Ugh.

The starter bolts did end up being the 3/8 ones. I used one 1.25" and one 1.50". The shorter one had a blind hole, but the longer one had a through hole.
