might be for a van, but the pic showed exactly what I was trying to describe.
Is it possible, that a mechanic may have left it off while deinstalling the column? I ask as my column was removed a couple of months ago when my shift column lever failed.
If someone had the column out and apart, I'd bet they didn't get it *all* back where it belongs. In other words, take it back and make them fix it for free, since they didn't do it right the 1st time.
I work in a shop, and if I don't get something right, I have to re-do it without getting paid. Hence, I strive to make sure I don't miss something.......
But where the column exits the firewall, I have nothing that resembles the assembly (15517) holding the switch and I don't find the harness (15525) laying around nearby. Without both there is no 15520-C switch.

1980/86 F100/350 & Econoline 3 M/T use the same B/U lamp switch, but the 15517 bracket was only used on 1980/82 Econolines.
Column does not need to be removed to replace shift lever, but there's no telling what some 'mechanics' will do that are unclear on the concept.
Left (upper): Econoline pic (same as post 13), there is not a pic like this for F100/350's / Right: Applications for 15517 bracket & 15520 switch.
Left (lower): 1980/86 F100/350 3 M/T steering column. As you can see, there's no reason to remove the column to replace the shift lever. As you cannot see: B/U switch not shown.
To Bill ('NumberDummy'), many thanks for the wisdom you continue to share on the forum. About the mechanic removing my column, you're right - there was no need to do so. As for the 15520-C, I see it is not on the steering diagram as you pointed out, but I do see it on the chassis wiring diagram above attached to a plate saying 'part of trans' for the E100/350. In any event, I have looked at both the tranny (Ford 3.03) and my column and find nothing at all. Please check out the photo in my album of the firewall side of the steering column.
You can also see 15520 "Part of Trans" in post 23 (left upper) parts catalog pic at right center.

Where are you located in CA?
Yes!!! I solved the backup light switch mystery just moments ago. I got under the truck and examined the wiring harness closely and found a connector not connected to anything. At first I thought it was a 'dud' as I couldn't see anything on the inside. Took some mass airflow cleaner, shot it inside, dirt/grease oozed out and viola'! - there were the two-pronged slots! I then examined the tranny case again and still found no switch, but did find an empty threaded hole - humm? Shot some cleaner in there, slid my cell phone camera in position, took a pic. The pic showed a 'teet' in the threaded hole - at the '3 O'Clock' position. In reverse the 'teet' was visible and in third gear it was absent. The switch (E0TZ15520C) failed while or before my late father owned the truck and it was never replaced. Why it wasn't repalced, who knows? I can only think of two reasons, 1) he couldn't find the part or 2) it wasn't the switch, but instead the 'teet' inside the tranny case was malfunctioning, causing the reverse lights to stay on.
Anyway, thanks to the FTE forum for your assistance
