I have a 76 F150 that is in need of a back up light. Truck is a single cab with a custom steel flat bed with Truck Lite combo lighting. No idea why but whoever made the setup either didn't remember or didn't wanna throw in any sort of reverse/BU light. I did some lookin and here's what I found:
1. No existing wires anywhere from cab or frame for OEM lights
2. Call be a bull****ter but there is no NSS on my column. Column is not original but was replaced with JY part.
3. Truck has a BM Megashifter on the floor but the column shift lever was not removed. Tried testing wires with col. shifter in R as well as BM. No luck
4. Weirdly enough the truck only starts in park or neutral. Havent looked into finding whatever NSS may be on BM shifter.
So long story short "what the hell?"
I need a BU light for inspection. State book says light must either turn off when vehicle goes forward automatically or if not auto there must be a light or buzzer that indicates light is on. So before I hard wire a light to a manual switch and red indicator, is there something I am missing or not understanding?
Check the side of your transmission. It could have the later '78-up transmission with the NSS mounted on the tranny.
If it's there, that also functions as the back up light switch.
whoops I forgot to add that I did crawl under and look at the side of transmission. I figured it'd be there like my 88 ford. I honestly didnt see any wires at all on or near either side of tranny. All I could see was the linkage, some hard lines, red coated cable for the BM and what I assume was the modulator and vacuum line for it
If it only starts in park or neutral, I would say there's a NSS somewhere in the mix. If its not on the column, about the only other place it could be would be on the side of the tranny.
Originally, like you said, the NSS was on the steering column. It's very easy to remove, only two screws hold it to the column and the actuator pin only clips to the shift tube.
If you can't find a switch on the side of the transmission where the shift linkage attaches, look at the top of the shift column near where it passes through the firewall. If the switch has been removed there will be a rectangular opening in the column tube. It wouldn't be much trouble to reinstall the switch and go from there.
You may want to check the B+M website for your model of shifter, I believe that a BU light switch is optional on a lot of their shifters. If so......problem solved.
that's what's been blowing my mind lol. I know for sure there isn't one on the column currently. You got me thinking though and I wonder if its not hanging somewhere under the dash. I'm about 80 percent sure about the tranny but ill run down and take some pictures just incase its there and i dont recognize it. could there be some sort of nss built into the BM assembly?
Or the NSS could be on the BM shifter itself? A quick search of Megashifter install instructions shows that at least some of them have some wiring for both the NSS and reverse lights. They should be two separate switches within the shifter console itself it sounds like. Maybe if you can find a part number on the shifter, you can search for the specific install instructions for yours.
BTW, starting in park or neutral only is not weird at all but rather how it is supposed to be for safety.
well after what you guys said I looked into the shifter and it looks like it comes with a NSS and BU switch. so looks like ill be starting there.
to "wyrm73" when I said weirdly I meant it was weird because I havent found the NSS, not that it was weird for only starting in those gears. im not the best wordsmith lol.
I discovered somewhat recently that my truck does start in any gear and I have had more than one person in my family look at me like I have lost my mind when I warn them. Never hurts to say something. Upon further reflection, maybe I should just not trust those individuals with my truck, lol.
