Yeah, it's a vacuum actuated heater control valve.
When you turn your AC to the MAX setting, that valve stops the coolant from flowing through the heater core, which allows the AC system to cool the air a few degrees more before coming through the vents.
That valve was not put on the 7.3L trucks, so F250/350 owners will sometimes do the AC Mod and add the valve.
thanks guys. Most of my mechanical experience is with older mustangs and hot rods. never seen one of these things before. Would think that ford might have made it out of something more durable than plastic.
Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have a question that is relevant.
The by-pass on my Ex is the type that has the "armature" thingy with hinges and the vacuum pushes or pulls the armature rod in and out of a little canister. I had to go to the dealer and pay more for that exact part than the box stores wanted for the mushroom-looking one in the picture above.
Question is: would the one pictured above (minus the bottom hose on it...they make them without the bottom hose attachment point) work in place of the expensive one from the dealer? I only ask in case I have to do this again.
To answer the above question, the one with just 2 connections just stops the water flow. The one with 3 connections redirects it back to the motor/radiator. Some manuf. like the 2 way connections and some like the 3way!.........ya i know apparently ford likes a 3-way!

uh..? Isn't the 3rd one for the rear ac/heating unit ?

Thank you for the reply.
I don't think I made my question clear though. I know what the third hose is for, and that system doesn't exist on my 05 Ex. The question was, would the valves shaped like the one above (only with two hoses) work the same as the one that came on my Ex from the factory? If no one knows the type of valve I'm talking about, I can try to get a link to a picture of one. It is more like a drum that is laid on its side with a diaphragm inside that pushes and pulls a linkage rod that opens and closes the gate.
