Starting Problems
The Starter went out on my 1974 Ford F-250 and when I replaced it, the truck would start but also with a loud grinding noise and would continue running with this noise until the starter was stripped. What went wrong?

The starter hung up in the starter ring gear. For some reason it did not disengage when you released the key. Most likely the ring gear teeth were chewed up enough by the old starter to grab the new one and not let go.
Another possibility is that the starter drive retract spring wasn't installed in the new starter. Some of the guys they hire to rebuild starters don't get paid much.
