About 1 in 5 times when I start my 93 5.0l, the started makes a grinding noise just after the engine starts.
It is the same sound the starter makes when you try to start an engine that is already running.
I turn the key, the starter always engaes fully, the engine turns over, it starts and then it makes the grinding sound for just a split second after the engin stars. Does not happen every time but maybe 3-4 times a week.
I've got a couple other things to check for too. Before you pull the starter see if the bolts are tight.I've seen them back out and the starter drive hangs up on the ring gear. Also worn ring gear teeth or the sprag in the starter drive is breaking apart.Hope this helps.
I had the same problem on my '93. The solenoid (on top of the starter) was sticking. This part is available by itself, but I decided to replace the whole starter.

Much less headache and more piece of mind. Rock Auto has Bosch starters real
reasonable.
i had the same problem and i replaced the starter twice then also the solenoid just couldnt get it to stop turns out it was my key switch staying on to far but you couldnt tell it look fine maybe this will help..
