So i had a problem with my 84 bronco II where the starter ate up the old ring gear so i replaced the old ring gear got a new starter and everything and now it seems to be makeing a wierd nosie when trying to start it and it seems like when i let go of the key after starting it there is a loud clunk coming for the starter area ... ive looked at the starter and the teeth seem fine still and the same for the new ring gear... i went and looked up a new starter and there is only 1 starter for this truck everywhere i looked... i know a couple threads on here staid somthign about a 9 or 10 bendix but that cant be right cause there is only 1 part listed every place i go... im was just wondering if anyone had any sugestions on what to do with the starter in the way of mounting it.... also that thin metal pate that is on the truck would that be causeing this problem... im also not totally sure if it is the starter that is making the noise but if i only do short bursts on the starter it wont do it sometimes and others it will..
thanks
p.s. im doing the HEI (duraspark)upgrade at the same time if that help anyone in the diagnosis
some times you might have to have to shim the starter back off the flywheel. some reman. starters for some reason kick the bendix out farther than it should and it can "hang" on the fly-wheel and make a bad sound as the starter turns faster than it is intended to.
The starter is fine it just seems liek it is not engauging with the full amount of the bendix teeth... how would i shim the starter? also someone striped the top bolt of the started and used a bigger bolt and i see that the bottom bolt has some play in the starter and the top does not .. would this cause any problems?
also how much does that plater betwee nthe tranny and the engine have to do with aligment.. the plate i have looks liek someoen tightend the starter dow in the worng spot and bent the lip down a bit ... would this hurt anything? thanks
if the starter isnt fully engaging then shiming it wouldnt help (to shim it back you would put washer between the starter and bellhouseing) if there there is play in the bottom bolt and none in the tup then try it various positions, using the top bolt like a pivot point, if the dust cover (metal plate) to the trasmission is out of shape and is holding the starter off the transmission they you have have to reshape it some till the starter sits properly.
