need help guys. 1993 f250 7.3l . I know my clutch is going/flywheel because i get the loud chatter at startup. but I have been getting this for a couple of years now. but today when I start it, I get a whining sound then the sound clicks and goes away. it is hard to describe. I think it is the starter. a couple of times it would not start at all, I would get the starter click and nothing else. My ignition switch is messed up, and I noticed when I start it and leave the key forward I hear the whining sound and when I back it off it goes away. My starter is about 3 years old from autozone, and I am leaning to that because a couple of times it would not crank at all. very intermittent. can a starter make that noise. it is not loud.
If the 'whir' is the starter spinning, but not engaging, could be one of two things. The starter drive is messed up, which means at least the drive (some call them Bendix, but that is a make of drive) needs replaced, or it could mean a bad spot on the ring gear that is not allowing it to engage.
I suppose, a third option, is with a gear reduction starter, (which is only on some of these trucks) there could be an issue in the gear reduction side of things too.
the whir/spinning noise is coming on after it does start. could that be the solenoid. 2 or 3 times it would not do anything. just hear the starter click. no engine turnover. so I am getting 2 different things happening that seem starter related.
I have lifetime warranty at autozone. this one is 6 years old. I am just trying to make sure it is the starter. It has not totally failed yet. just intermittent problem all of a sudden.
