Having just recently(last couple of years)learned that it was possible to put a cam with a 351W firing order in a 302, I've got a question for you guys.
I've read(in here)where you can't tell the difference between a 390 and the similar-but-smaller motors without opening them up.
So, is there any way to tell a true 351W from a 302 with an aftermarket cam with a 351 firing order without checking bore and stroke?
I'm checking to see that a 302 didn't mysteriously become a 351W somewhere along the way.
BTW, just 'cuz I worked for GM dealerships for 24 years doesn't mean my shop truck isn't a '61 F-100.
Also seems like all the Mustang guys in Arkansas found me...we've done 3 in the year+ I've been running this place and another one is due in in Nov.
Same block and bore. The 302 has a 3" stroke where the 351's is 3.50.
I'm not sure if you can check the stroke on these by running a dowel through the spark plug hole and turning the motor from TDC to BDC and measuring the distance.
Anyone?

The 351W has a taller deck height and wider intake than the 302. I know the heads will usually interchange but that's about it. I'm not sure about the exact measurements but for the intake widths I think the 351W is about 11" wide and the 302 is about 9". You can do a search in the engine section or on the internet to find more specifics. Hope that helps a little....
Thanks guys. After I posted this yesterday I had to go to Harrison AR. to score some parts for one of the Mustangs. The guy there had a whole room full of engines and there was a 351 and a 302 sitting side by side. Pretty easy to pick out the differences when the 2 engines are sitting on the ground.
OBP, yes, we'll do anything from a frame-off complete restoration to just paint jobs. The Mustang we're about to finish got new floors from the firewall all the way to the back bumper, new quarter panels, and the filler piece between the back window and the deck lid. On the other hand, the '89 F150 we just finished was just take the body apart and change the color from gray/white to solid blue., fix some dents and Rhinoline the bed. Anybody needs any Mustang parts, I've got a great contact in Harrison. He's 86 years old, sharp as a tack and has about $1,000,000 in inventory, used and new parts. Heck he was even showing me a rack of about 10 true 64 1/2 hoods, brand new hoods. Another learning experience, I didn't know there was a difference between the 64 1/2 and 65 hoods. Old guy loves to talk about cars.
Hey bro, Share some luv with the rest of us here, what is the difference between true 64 1/2 hood and 65?? I have become an old fart without knowing this thing.
