fmc400, I just read this thread. As you know from your help last week, I changed over the front end on my daughters f100. In doing so the casing for male wires to the ignition module crumbled in my hand. I connected them and the truck runs fine. I have a parts truck and I took that module and installed it, the truck had difficulty starting but did start. I know I can do your test, but wondering , shouldn't it "work or not work"? and not be in between?

Most of the aftermarket modules don't have the "start retard" feature that Motorcraft modules have...

This feature eases starting by retarding the timing 4-6 degrees during cranking, without it starting can sometimes be difficult.

The components of the module are subject to stress and age, which can lead to reduced primary current and inaccurate dwell. The module can very much be in between or fail intermittently. My recommendation is to use OEM Motorcraft modules. They are on the expensive side, but will outlast the truck. I don't run anything else.
