I went to take my dad's 1996 f-150 ex-cab 5.8 auto 4wd out yesterday morning. As soon as I fired it up the odometer read ERROR. When I would put it in gear and go forward or reverse the speedometer would jump from 0-80 mph even though I was only doing 5-10. Their was a strange noise, very quiet, coming from behind the dash as I would be moving.
I checked the service manual and it said with the ERROR message to replace the gauge cluster, verify proper operation. Where should I start checking first?? It worked fine Friday night. Will it damage anything driving it like this?
Thanks!!
Sounds like the PSOM (speedo) has crapped out. This thread explains more about it, but I don't think there's much you can do other than replace it. Used instrument clusters sell for ~$50-90 on eBay, $20-100 at junkyards, and ~$250 at Ford. Ford can burn the odometer to your actual mileage, though.
