Well It's a 95 F250 4x4 5.8L 5 speed. I have 2H & 4H but I can't get the case to shift to N or 4L. It says something on the shifter about pushing down but I don't see how you can push down and pull back at the same time. I've used about 1/2 can of wd40 seeing if it was froze but that did no good....Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Should I pull the linkage off and try to move the shifter pawl with a pair of vise grips? Like I said previously it shifts 2H and 4H, try to pull it farther back to N or 4L and it's like hitting a brick wall, literally, just solid. Maybe someone has a diagram of the shifter linage setup I could review?
Thanks
That exactly how it should work... push down and pull back. What usually gets stuck is the up/down part of the linkage. There's supposed to be a rubber boot on it, but by now it's probably either missing or torn.
I would disconnect the linkage from the t-case and try shifting the gears by hand. If the case looks good, try moving the linkage while it's disconnected. If you look at it carefully, you can see the gates that you have to go around (the reason you have to push down) to get into Neutral / 4L.
Don't force it, the newer push-down type linkage apparently likes to break rather easily when forced.
Also, try some REAL penetrating oil like PB Blaster instead of that weaksauce WD-40.
EDIT: Here you go, Diesel_Brad did this writeup showing how to fix a busted shifter. You can see the up/down portion of it where it's probably stuck.

I saw that write up about a week ago. Thankfully mine isn't broken.
As for the rubber boot, which one are you referring to? I have 3 boots, I've found so far. 1 on top for floorboard around shifter. 2 is another smaller boot under that inset just under the floorboard and 3, if I crawl under the truck on the main body of the shifter there is a rubber boot in very good condition facing towards the ground. Should I remove boot #3 and spray some PB blaster in it? I agree that WD is weak but it's what I had on hand. I couldn't get in the garage because I was having a tree taken down and all entrances were blocked. I also have some Kroil oil I could squirt up in there if that's better. Thanks for your input.
Yeah sorry, I meant the boot on the main body of the shifter mechanism, not the 2 in the cab for the lever.
Not sure on the Kroil, never used it. I used to use WD-40 but discovered PB Blaster... awesome stuff especially when used with a little heat where appropriate.
