1993 F150 5.0 w/E406 The truck started fine this morning. Later went out to start it & the problem began. The truck started fine but the volt meter didn't move. When I took there was no accelleration, the truck ran but I had to nurse it to get it up to 55 mph. If you stepped on it it felt like it was going to die from lack of fuel. Also I could not turn the OD off on the transmission. The battery is new & the truck started fine after the difficult drive. Seems like maybe some kind of computer/electrical problem. Please help!!! I was suppose to go out of town with the truck for a week on Friday.
Yeah, the fail mode for the computer is kind of like a limp-home mode. Just enough to get you home or to the shop but I would not like to be driving more than a few miles that way. Good catch.
OK, so the fuse replacement fixes the problem for a little while. The fuse will blow sporadically upon start up only. Seems if the air conditioner is on when starting the fuse won't blow. Once again it's fuse #17. '93 F-150 XLT 5.0 2wd E4OD. Could the ignition switch be going bad or am I grounding out somewhere causing the fuse to blow? Will the computer codes show anything related to this type of problem? Also, if the fuse blows when I start the truck I can change it out while its running and it will not have any problems at all.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jul-02 AT 01:43 PM (EST)]You may have a bad ground connection between the frame/body and engine. If the primary ground is open or high resistance, the starter will cause excessive current through whatever grounding is present. Make sure the battery negative is connected to the engine block.
Winford, thanks for yor reply. I just put in a new battery & ground cable aprox 6-8 monthes ago. Since the Ford cable was a $40.00 special order I didn't get it. I replaced the cable with a NAPA cable to the engine block & a ground strap from the same block connection to the frame. A local shop checked the battery amps and alternator charging system and it tested good. If the battery ground is not grounded good will this affect the charging system? I will also check to make sure all connections are still secure.
