got a charging problem on my 7.3 volt guage is reading just above the 8 mark (so almost no charge) usally when i start the truck it takes about a min then my guage clicks up to the half mark on the volt meter. now today it starts fine it just sticks low on the volt meter. like im getting no charge lights are dim but truck starts right up even in the cold i just replaced the starter about a month ago and help would be appericated.....
what amp alt dose the truck use? i went to the ford dealer today looking to get a new one they said there is 135 amp and a 215 amp alt. i was looking all around on mine and cant tell what amp it is. plus the 215amp alt was flipping $915 bucks where the 135 was like 200 bucks huge price difference. they didnt seam to know what the differecnce was between the 2
Before you buy a new one you should check the wiring on the top of the alternator. They get mashed from laying on it while working in the engine compartment. Jiggle them while running, look at the wires on the back too.
The dealer prices will be higher than aftermarket no matter which one you get.
The 135 is good enough unless you plan on running a lot of electrical stuff off the truck.

Yes it is, on the other end of it. It really is two 12ga links y'd together and attached to the relay on the right(passenger) fender behind the batt. I dought it is bad, but if there is no power to the big wire on the alt that is the first place I'd look.

i checked the large wire with a meter. got around 12v out of the back of the alt im going to get it checked at autozone..good charge is about 14v truck running right??
