Question Volt meter bounce

HI All,

Just got a 94 Turbo Diesel but it didn't come with an owners manaul so I can't refer to it about this problem/question. Have one on order, but in the mean time:

After I start the diesel after the warm-up light goes out, I noticed that as soon as the engine starts the volt meter will bounce from about 8 volts to 15 and then back to 8 volts. It will do this about 5 times and then settle and stop around 14 volts. (actual volts is a ques)

Is this normal??

Thanks

Tom (wondering if I have a battery problem starting)

Volt meter bounce

Thats normal. Its the glow plugs cycling to clear start up smoke, etc. They draw quite a bit of power.
